Our “farm pod” is currently a 1-day/week, non-drop-off program that has grown sweetly and organically to 10 families (currently with children up to age 4.5) since its soft launch on July 3, 2024. The inspiration of Saplings is drawn from various approaches to outdoor education, like Waldorf and Forest School, as well as our passion for connecting the next generation to farm-life activities. The original intentions were to create a homeschool pod with several like-minded families that would allow their children to grow up together with pooled resources for land- and farm-based educational enrichment.

Our goal is to create a unique, outdoor learning experience, where children can interact and learn with each other in the context of life-giving food systems grown in tandem with the natural ecology of Upper Ojai Valley. Taking inspiration from a handful of early childhood education theories, such as Waldorf, Montessori, RIE, and utilizing carefully selected ecology-based homeschool curricula, we encourage hands-on exploration and discovery. Children learn about farming, animals, and the environment through interactive activities, fostering a deep connection with nature, integrating traditional subjects with practical skills, to promote holistic development. This educational opportunity supports MAMA TREE’s mission by nurturing curiosity, creativity, and a love for the natural world, to provide a foundation for lifelong learning and environmental stewardship.
